The Counting House

1723 — 1992

Smith believed markets were human sympathy properly ordered; Marx believed they were the engine of exploitation. Malthus did the arithmetic on hunger and was cursed for it. Ricardo argued with him for twenty years and never won. Mill tried to reconcile liberty with justice; George wanted to tax the land alone; Veblen laughed at the leisure class; Keynes and Hayek fought over the century's depression and never settled it. They all read each other. None would concede.
